Describes the Blueprints for Violence Prevention initiative, presents lessons learned about program implementation, and provides recommendations for program designers, funders, and implementing agencies and organizations. The Blueprints project was developed by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado–Boulder and is supported by OJJDP. It has evolved into a large-scale prevention initiative, both identifying model programs and providing technical support to help sites choose and implement programs with a high degree of integrity. After reviewing more than 600 violence prevention programs, the Blueprints initiative has identified 11 model programs and 21 promising programs that prevent violence and drug use and treat youth with problem behaviors. In 1996 the US Air Force implemented a programme that focused on removing the shame associated with mental health problems and on increasing social support, coping skills, and help seeking; Knox and colleagues analysed its impact on more than five million soldiers. The number of suicides was reduced by a third, and adverse events associated with similar risk factors—homicides, severe family violence, and accidental deaths—were reduced by up to 54%.

July 2004 Juvenile Justice Bulletin. Presents results of the process evaluation of Blueprints programs, identifying critical components of program implementation. The Blueprints for Violence Prevention initiative, developed by the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado–Boulder and supported by OJJDP, is a leader in identifying exemplary violence prevention and drug prevention programs that have been evaluated in rigorous, controlled trials. A major goal of the Blueprints initiative has been to enhance the understanding of program implementation by studying the factors that hinder the successful implementation of programs.
