Means matter: Suicide, guns, and public health

Demonstrates that reducing a suicidal person’s access to lethal means helps save lives, particularly among impulsive attempters and that firearms are the most lethal and most common suicide method. "Means Matter" is a HICRC social marketing campaign aimed at educating members of the 50 statewide suicide prevention coalitions about the connection between firearms at home and increased risk of suicide.

National Mental Health Awareness Campaign

NMHAC, a nationwide nonpartisan public education campaign, was launched as part of the 1999 White House Conference on Mental Health organized by Tipper Gore. It has a two-pronged goal: encourage people to identify, discuss, and seek help for mental health problems; and create a more accepting environment for them to do so. The website includes materials for campaign speakers, students, adults, and professionals.

This presentation was delivered at the State and Tribal Suicide Prevention Grantees Meeting, January, 2009, for the Continuing Grantee Panel on Local Evaluation, Enhanced Evaluation. It describes an evaluation of the impact of the NYSP on awareness and community readiness. NYSP is a program of NARA NW, a coalition of 8 Tribal communities and Portland State University with programming based upon traditional, spiritual and cultural beliefs,integrated with best practices.

Project Relate

Project Relate is a public service campaign that strives to break down the stigma and stereotypes associated with mental illness and help the public relate to those who cope with these issues. The project is a joint effort between mental health service providers, advocacy groups, and non-profit organizations across Nebraska. In addition to speaking out against stigma and providing information about mental illness to the community, Project Relate also aims to provide a clearinghouse of mental health resources across the state of Nebraska.

What a difference a friend makes (National Mental Health Anti-Stigma Campaign)

SAMHSA launched this campaign to encourage, educate, and inspire people between 18 and 25 to support their friends who are experiencing mental health problems. The prevalence of serious mental health conditions in this age group is almost double that of the general population, yet young people have the lowest rate of help-seeking behaviors. This group has a high potential to minimize future disability if social acceptance is broadened and they receive the right support and services early on.
