VA Medical Center, New Orleans, implemented a four-item screening tool. The authors report on an evaluation of the screening program.

Depressive disorder treatment in the military health system (MHS): A national quality management program special study

The purpose of this study was twofold. First, the study obtained baseline measurement rates for the Major Depressive Disorder CPG (the diagnosis codes for depression included non major depression diagnoses). Second, the study measured Antidepressant Medication Management using Health Plan Employers Data and Information Set (HEDIS) 2002 Technical Specifications. MHS (Military Health System) performance rates were compared to rates from HEDIS civilian managed care plans.

The study will was not limited to veterans of the 1991 Gulf War but also will be applicable to veterans of the current conflict (Operation Iraqi Freedom; Operation Enduring Freedom).

In 1996 the US Air Force implemented a programme that focused on removing the shame associated with mental health problems and on increasing social support, coping skills, and help seeking; Knox and colleagues analysed its impact on more than five million soldiers. The number of suicides was reduced by a third, and adverse events associated with similar risk factors—homicides, severe family violence, and accidental deaths—were reduced by up to 54%.
