Risk of suicide and related adverse outcomes after exposure to a suicide prevention programme in the US Air Force: cohort study

[Journal article]. Published in: BMJ. 2003 Dec 13;327(7428):1376. In 1996 the US Air Force implemented a programme that focused on removing the shame associated with mental health problems and on increasing social support, coping skills, and help seeking; Knox and colleagues analysed its impact on more than five million soldiers. The number of suicides was reduced by a third, and adverse events associated with similar risk factors—homicides, severe family violence, and accidental deaths—were reduced by up to 54%.
